Match Tips — Updated for the 2009 Match

Q: How many fellows should I interview for each open position?

A: It is recommended that programs interview approximately 20-25% more fellows than you did previously, although it does depend on the competitiveness of the program. There is no limit to the number of applicants you can rank for each position.

Q: If I rank a fellow will they be considered for both clinical and research positions?

A: If a fellow would like to be considered for both clinical and research positions, they must rank both separately in their list. Similarly, a program must rank a fellow for both if they would like the fellow to be considered for both.

Q: Can I have my Program Coordinator log in and update my information on the NRMP website?

A: Be cautious about sharing your log in name and password with anyone else. The match contract is between the Program Director and the NRMP, thus you would be responsible for anything done on the web application. Only the Program Director should log in to the application and submit a rank order list, however anyone can access or call the helpdesk at the NRMP.

Q: Why do I need to log in to the NRMP website now if the rank order list is not open until much later?

A: It is important to register your program on the NRMP website (www.nrmp.org) and your NRMP IO (same as ACGME DIO) must activate the program so that applicants can find your program when they search in the NRMP?s database.

Q: Is my program code my ACGME identification number?

A: No, each program code is unique to the program. However, AAMC identification numbers are unique to the Program Director and a new one must be obtained by all new Program Directors in the future.

Q: How will the NRMP contact me in the future?

A: The NRMP will contact the Program Directors via email. It is very important to make sure that your email address on their website is your primary email address. It is also important to add them to your ?safe list? or ?white list? so their correspondence does not go to a spam folder.

Q: Can I change my clinical and research quotas?

A: Yes, you can change them until May 20, 2009 11:59pm EST. Your NRMP institutional official (same as ACGME DIO) must approve any quota change.

Q: Once I certify my rank order list, can I change it?

A: Yes, you can change it anytime from April 8, 2009 to June 3, 2009 but you must certify it after each change.

Q: Can I tell a fellow they are my number one choice for a position?

A: Yes, you can tell a fellow where you intend to rank them, but you cannot ask a fellow where they intend to rank you. However, they are allowed to volunteer that information if they choose to.
